Project Description

The main goal of the Matawa Book Translation and Creation project is to engage community members to create community-driven, culturally-relevant, dialect-specific Anishinaabemowin books for the students attending school in the Matawa communities. Development of language resources in first year; and the use of the resources in second year.

2018-2019

Resource 1

  • Book(s): Translated versions of existing culturally-relevant, leveled readers at Kindergarten – Grade 3 level
  • Language Level: Beginner
  • Target Audience: Students in Kindergarten – Grade 3 and their families

Resource 2

  • Book(s): Newly created cultural books featuring photos and explanation of traditional skills, activities or knowledge, as per Elder guidance: Kindergarten – Grade 3 level.
    Language Level: Beginner
    Target Audience: Students in Kindergarten – Grade 3 and their families

2019-2020

Participatory 1

  • Book Launce to distribute Year 1 Anishinaabemowin books and coach parents on reading the books with children. Students and Parents will work with Elders, translators, school staff, and Matawa staff to practice reading Anishinaabemowin books together.
  • Language Level: Beginner
  • Number of Participants: 1,120
  • Number of Hours per Participant: 4
  • Target Audience: Students in Grades Kindergarten – 3 and their families
